Madison A - Z Poster
In celebration of our centennial, the MHS is pleased to offer for sale the Madison A - Z poster--a local distinctiveness project featuring all that is unique to our town.
What is Local Distinctiveness?
Local distinctiveness is a relatively new term defined as the details, large and small, that combine to give a town its sense of place. These can include cultural, historical, and natural features as well as people and events that make one town unique from another.
Community Engagement Project
Conceived as a community engagement project, the poster celebrates all that is unique to Madison using the letters of the alphabet. Launched in March, the project began by asking people to tell us what is special about Madison using the letters of the alphabet. Next we gathered all the responses - nearly five hundred hundred in total - and selected those we felt best represented Madison.
Next, we worked with local artists to create the graphic representations for each letter. Lastly, board trustee and president emeritus Rick Camp designed the final product, which is nothing short of wonderful.
Collaboratively Celebrating Madison
A year in the making, the poster is a collaboration between the MHS and members of the Madison Art Society. Special thanks to Beth Wardwell for overseeing this project from start to finish and for contributing to the poster.
The MHS would like to thank the following artists who donated their time and resources bringing to life each letter:
Bill Colrus
Bill Dowling
Mike Eagle
Hilary Griffin
Betsey Piner
Beverly Schirmeier
Beth Wardwell
The MHS also wishes to recognize and thank the estate of George Love. Several of his vintage paintings were used to complete this project.
