Vintage photo of Lee's Academy

In the care of the MHS since 1923, Lee’s Academy has been a part of Madison’s built environment for nearly 200 years. Located on the historic Madison green, it currently houses our administrative offices, research library, and exhibition hall.

In late 2018, the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD) announced it will provide $3,051,971 in grants to twelve nonprofit organizations through the Good to Great grant program. The MHS was awarded $138,600 for the restoration and preservation of Lee’s Academy and to create an ADA-compatible learning and community center.

This dynamic learning and community center will be a space where we tell Madison's story using our extensive collection of artifacts. The center will have expanded opening hours, be available for community use for special events and meetings, and will provide greater access to all community members. Its location at the heart of the community and its use by many organizations will increase awareness of our town’s rich history.
